Arthur Aronymus. Die Geschichte meines Vaters [Arthur Aronymus. The Story of my Father] was written and first published in 1932. A little later the author changed the play’s title to Arthur Aronymus und seine Väter, subtitled Aus meines geliebten Vaters Kinderjahren. Schauspiel in fünfzehn Bildern [Arthur Aronymus and His Fathers. From the Childhood of my Beloved Father. Play in Fifteen Pictures], and subsequently the text has been reprinted under both titles. The premiere took place in 1936 in Zurich, where Lasker-Schüler was forced to live in exile. The play explores the impact of religious, ethnic, and class differences within mixed communities and revolves around Jewish culture inside German society rife with antisemitism. Slapstick, satire, and surreal drama are combined in a play that anticipates what was to come under the National Socialists’ regime of terror....
