Sir Walter Scott’s review of Emma was published in the prestigious Quarterly Review, 14 (October 1815), pp. 188-201. The issue actually appeared in March 1816. Emma was announced for publication by John Murray in December 1815, but the title-page bore the year 1816.

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a publisher, editor, poet and novelist of enormous distinction. In 1815 he was already famous for his popular verse romances, The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805), Marmion (1808), The Lady of the Lake (1810) and The Lord of the Isles (1815). He had also begun publishing novels anonymously in 1814 with
