The collected edition of the Irish R.M. stories by Edith Somerville and Martin Ross (Violet Martin) includes three groups of comic stories about the English resident magistrate with an Irish background, Major Yeates of County Cork. Edith Somerville’s amusing illustrations add to the stories’ zany treatments of Irish country life. “Some Experiences of an Irish R.M.” appeared in the sporting periodical Badminton Magazine in 1898-99. “Further Experiences of an Irish R.M.” was published in the popular illustrated magazines, Strand Magazine and The Graphic, from 1904-08, and “In Mr. Knox’s Country” appeared mainly in the family miscellany, Blackwood’s Magazine, from 1913-15.
