Martin Walser’s short novel Jenseits der Liebe [Beyond All Love, 1976] deserves recognition as an important text in the author’s literary development, because it links thematic elements from his early period with a more succinct style, typical of his successful creative phase beginning with the novella Ein fliehendes Pferd [Runaway Horse, 1978].
