Robin Howells

Robin Howells is Emeritus Professor of French at Birkbeck, University of London.

His domain of specialisation is 17C and 18C literature and culture (principally the Enlightenment), with a particular interest in prose fiction, genre and re-writing; also period style, history of ideas, and organised religion.

His literary approach is broadly structuralist but diachronic; his criticism draws particularly on Bakhtin (the carnivalesque, dialogism) and on Freud.
