Stacie Allan is a PhD candidate at the University of Bristol. Her doctoral project entitled 'The French Self and the Foreign Other in the Works of Germaine de Staël and Claire de Duras' is an investigation of the cross-section of gender and nationality in early nineteenth-century France. The thesis' primary line of enquiry is how the two authors write the self through foreign Others yet its scope equally addresses questions of female political engagement, the place of female authors in French Romanticism, and French women's writing more broadly. Drawing on psychoanalysis and autobiographical theory, Romantic melancholia is analysed in turn through the lenses of masculinity, femininity, and representations of England. Stacie's other main area of research explores Claire de Duras's political interests, particularly her fascination with the figure of Louis XIV.
