Carrie Beneš

Carrie Beneš (PhD UCLA 2004) is Professor of Medieval and Renaissance History at New College of Florida. She is the author of Urban Legends: Civic Identity & the Classical Past in Northern Italy, 1250–1350 (Penn State, 2011) and general editor of the Companion to Medieval Genoa (Brill, 2018). She has also recently completed an English translation of Jacopo da Varagine’s Chronicle of the City of Genoa for Manchester University Press’s Medieval Sources series (forthcoming 2019). She has now turned back to her larger continuing project, for which she received the Rome Prize in 2008–9, which explores the changing role of the classical abbreviation SPQR in the politics and ideology of medieval and Renaissance Italy.
