Among the wide range of works published by Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), Time and Western Man (1927) is distinguished for its ambition to produce an overall critical analysis of contemporary intellectual, political, and literary currents. From 1918, the year in which his first satirical novel Tarr was published, Lewis had abandoned public life and devoted himself to research in the British Museum. Having in 1913 broken his ties with the Bloomsbury Group - notably with Roger Fry and the Omega Workshops - he had been frequenting the “British Museum Circle” of William Rothenstein, R.A. Streatfield and Laurence Binyon. A protégé of Sturge Moore and admired by Ezra Pound, in 1914 he co-founded with Pound the English avant-garde movement, Vorticism. Moore, despite being a fellow artist, had encouraged Lewis to focus on his writings.
