Born in Mexico City on April 2, 1949, Sara Sefchovich is a Mexican sociologist, historian, writer and professor, currently at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Sefchovich stopped writing fiction over fifteen years ago because, as she has explained several times, the genre cannot account for the violent reality of Mexico. This decision very well exemplifies who Sefchovich is and why her work matters. A woman with strong convictions, committed to the reality of her time, both through research and activism, Sefchovich has dedicated her work to understanding Mexican culture and how Mexico works as a society, with a particular interest in women.
