Tutor of Pietro Bembo as well as friend and correspondent of Angelo Poliziano and Marsilio Ficino, Giovanni Aurelio Augurello is best known for his vast poetic production in Latin and the vernacular. Born in Rimini, Augurello resided between Padua, Treviso and Venice for most of his adult life. From the scholars and antiquarii of these towns, Augurello borrowed his distinctive take on the studia humanitatis, which he experienced as a textual and material pursuit. The countless descriptions of sculptures, paintings, bridges and buildings disseminated in his poems, together with the alchemical techniques immortalized in the didactic poem Chrysopoeia, cross the boundaries of art and literature.
