Following the death of Pope Gregory XIII on 12th April, Felice Peretti di Montalto is elected Pope Sixtus V. He is to hold the position until his death in 1590, and is notable for the extent of his public works, including the completion of the dome of St Peter's basilica. However, this work was carried out at the expense of Roman antiquities, for which Sixtus had little appreciation: the Roman military monument known as Trajan's Column, now a landmark in itself, was used as a pedastal for a statue of St Peter.
