The Dutch fleet, under the command of Admiral de Ruyter,
launches an attack on England. They burn Sheerness, sail up the
River Medway, raid Chatham dockyard and escapes with the royal
barge, the 'Royal Charles'. This episode marks the nadir of English
naval power.
