On the death of Emperor Wilhelm I of Germany, he is succeeded by
his son Friedrich III, but his reign only lasts 99 days as on his
accession, he is already suffering from terminal cancer of the
larynx. From June, therefore, the throne passes to Frederick's son
Wilhelm II, who rules until the collapse of the German Empire in
the aftermath of the First World War.
