The first hand held cellular (or mobile) phone was patented as a 'radio telephone system' on the 17th of October, 1973 by Martin Cooper (born 26th December, 1928) and his team of engineers working for Motorola. The handset weighed two kilos and Cooper made the first cellular phone call on the 3rd of April, 1973 to Dr. Joel S. Engel, of Bell Labs, his rival in the race to develop the mobile phone.
