On 15 October, the U.S. Senate approved the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, despite distasteful allegations of sexual harassment against him by Anita Hill, a former aide. He became only the second African American to serve on the Court, replacing retiring Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first black.
