and subsequently translated into English by Ann Goldstein. In 2016, the New York-based publishing house Knopf released for the Anglophone literary market a bilingual edition featuring the Italian text on the verso and the English translation on the recto.

In Other Words was initially conceived as Lahiri’s own personal journal describing her immersion in the Italian language during her two-year stay in Rome in 2012. Before being compiled into a memoir by Guanda, a subset of its chapters had previously appeared in the Italian magazine Internazionale. Structured in twenty-three short chapters, the book can be described, per the author’s own
