Born in 1903 to one of the most prominent and wealthy Argentine families, Silvina Ocampo was the youngest of Manuel Silvino Ocampo and Ramona Aguirre’s six daughters. Her childhood was, by all accounts, privileged in material comforts, foreign travel, and educational opportunities; the opulent family residences in both the city and country housed the large family and staff, including English and French governesses. Ocampo grew up in an era when children of the Argentine aristocracy learned English and French before Spanish. Despite her social standing and age, she was able to cross socioeconomic boundaries through relationships with both the servants of the house and visitors from other wealthy families.
