This oppressive legislation favoured the szlachta (nobility), as it bound the Polish peasantry to the land and their landlords, giving the landowner unlimited time to capture runaway peasants, while only one peasant per village would henceforth be permitted to leave his landlord. It aimed to solidify social hierarchies, as members of the middle estates were forbidden to own szlachta land, while the szlachta themselves received tax benefits and monopolies on the production of alcohol.
