At the Battle of Hampton Roads, off the coast of Virginia, the iron-clad Confederate vessel the Virginia, which had been built from the hull of the USS Merrimack, sinks the Unionists' ship Cumberland. However, the following day, the Virginia is forced to withdraw by Unionist vessel Monitor, and both sides claim victory.
