In the Irish 'Land War', Captain Charles Boycott, a land agent
in Mayo, is ostracised by the local population after he refuses to
reduce rents to the rate demanded by tenants suffering the effects
of bad harvests. This is the origin of the term 'boycott', since
his case is soon picked up by the newspapers and becomes
famous.
