Samsonov’s film was the second of three Soviet film versions of Shakespeare’s play, the others being a 1956 adaptation, under the same title, and a 1983 musical version, Lyubovyu za Lyubov. Samsonov was an experienced director, having already made nine feature films for the Mosfilm studio.
