The Sino-American in the early 1970s posed a clear and present danger to the sovereignty of Taiwan. Indeed, the Nationalist government in Taipei prepared for diplomatic isolation and possible security crises. On 1 January 1979, the U.S. and China signed a normalization agreement established formal diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China and called for an end to all formal Taiwan/American defense connections. The U.S. also tacitly accepted the notion that there is one China and Taiwan is a part of that China. However, the U.S. Congress subsequently passed the Taiwan Relations Act, authorizing continued social and economic ties with Taiwan.
