The Rural Electrification Administration, created 11 May, was another effort by the Roosevelt administration to ameliorate the effects of the Great Depression. The REA was created with the express purpose of raising the standard of living in rural areas and reducing the rural to urban migration which placed increasing pressures on city leaders. The REA offered subsidies for the construction of power lines and power plants which gave rural inhabitants access to electric lighting and radio, normal in urban centres.
