The Michelson stellar interferometer was proposed by Albert Michelson (19th December, 1852 - 9th May, 1931) in 1890. It was one of the earliest astronomical interferometers and was used by Michelson and Francis G. Pease to measure the super giant star Betelgeuse in 1920. Michelson became the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in sciences in 1907.
