Bayazid II, Sultan of Turkey, abdicates in favour of his youngest son, Selim, Governor of Trebizond, who becomes Selim I (-1520), following a civil war in which he defeats his brothers Ahmad and Corcud. Under his rule the Ottomans became the recognised leaders of the Islamic world; this was recognised symbolically when the sharif of Mecca gave him the keys to the holy city.
