] in 1849, and has received little attention compared to many of the author’s other works, it nevertheless represents a significant stage in his development as a writer, and may have been more influential than its status as a minor work suggests. Set largely in St Petersburg, it features many of the themes and tropes most readily identified with Dostoevsky’s novelistic world, including poverty, addiction, physical and mental breakdown, the “accidental family”, abusive relationships, and the vicissitudes of a “wounded heart”.
