On 9 April 1743, a London newspaper advertised the publication by Andrew Millar of

Miscellanies, by Henry Fielding, Esq; In Three Volumes

. The appearance of this set had been delayed for a considerable period of time, as the author had been taking in subscriptions for at least a year before the earliest surviving announcement of the project showed up in the press on 5 June 1742. At this stage the author was still expecting a prompt delivery to subscribers, but the project stalled for almost another year. Fielding put the initial delay down to “the Author’s Indisposition last Winter, and a Train of melancholy Accidents scarce to be parallel’d”.
